The streets of New York are littered with losing lottery tickets, in the form of human beings. It's a constant, confronting situation for the better heeled, and one that contains all the necessary nutrients for a variety of approaches and attitudes to flourish companionably. As I was preparing this week's issue, I was inspired by a coincident that I witnessed on a downtown train.
